Sandiwa Conference 2008

In Honor of the Struggle

New York City, New York - May 31, 2008

Bayanihan Filipino Community Center

41-20 69th Street
Woodside, NY

Everyone everywhere is in a constant state of struggle. It is because of these struggles that we face each day, that we learn more about our roots, rights and responsibilities as Filipinos globally. In the presence of this struggle we strive to unite. We cannot erase the past so we must learn to integrate it with our lives today, not only to understand our effect on the future, but in part our reason for building the youth alliance in North America today. We are not bound by the past, we continue to honor it, not for the sake of a metaphorical “Utang na Loob,” but for the very reason that we ourselves wish to better our future generations with the same dedication and traditions that our ancestors held as they struggled to create our present. To honor our heritage, we come together in one consciousness, we honor its struggle. We honor it for its love, patience, courage, resistance, commitment, and sincerity to serve the people without asking anything in return. We are the culmination of those silent dreams and we prove that they exist. We prove that if we unite, work together and have a common goal we can better move forward to educate, advocate and celebrate as the national alliance of Filipino American youth in SANDIWA - one essence, we best honor the struggle.

*SanDiwa means ONE conciousness and spirit in Tagalog and is a Filipino American National Organization started by alumni from the Philippine Studies Program.
